Welcome to Nevada Volunteers
Welcome to Nevada Volunteers, a new name for the Nevada Commission for National and Community Service, Inc. and a new look at the state of volunteering in Nevada. Nevada Volunteers plans to build a collaborative statewide infrastructure that supports already-existing volunteer efforts across the state; increases and improves volunteer opportunities; and improves volunteer management and retention.
First Lady Dawn Gibbons announced the name change on September 11th, 2007, following a unanimous vote by the commission's board of directors. The First Lady has joined the commission as honorary Chair of Nevada Volunteers in order to boost efforts to improve the state's last place ranking in volunteerism.
"A rebranding of our efforts to 'Nevada Vounteers' will help communicate awareness that Nevada values its volunteers. Volunteerism is a fact of life for most Nevadans," said Dawn Gibbons.
The commission is in its 10th year as a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to award and administer the AmeriCorps*State funds, a national service program that rewards citizens for serving their communities with a stipend and education award. They also manage the annual Governor's Points of Light awards. Their goal is to strengthen Nevada through service and volunteerism.
"We're delighted with our broader focus and are thrilled the First Lady has taken up the cause to bring more awareness to volunteerism in Nevada," said Shawn Lecker-Pomaville, executive director. "This is a unique opportunity for Nevada to strategically utilize service and volunteerism to address many of our state's unmet needs."
